Gillian Anderson revealed she identifies pansexual — attracted to all people regardless of gender identity — as she reconfirmed her history of romantic relationships with women.
The “X-Files” star, 58, labeled her sexuality in a new interview with The Australian, just weeks after recounting one of her first relationships with with “an older girl in high school.”
“In my younger years, I was in relationships with women,” the actress, who has been linked to “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan for a decade, confirmed.
Elsewhere in the interview, Anderson talked about how her sexuality evolved after hearing the experiences of other women.
“I’m not a big flirter. I don’t put it out there very much. I do hear of a lot of women around our age who are rediscovering their sensuality and their desire for sex,” she said.
“It certainly sounds like they’re in the dating field. That they’re having a lot of fun, a lot of opportunities, but also being approached on these apps by much younger men.”
She added that working on Netflix’s hit show “Sex Education” made her more sex positive, leading to her book “Want” and her new one, “More,” which are collections letters detailing desires and sexual fantasies written by anonymous women around the globe.
Anderson, who shares daughter Piper, 31, with ex-husband Clyde Klotz and sons Oscar, 19, and Felix, 17, with former partner Mark Griffiths, previously discussed her relationships with the Sunday Times.
“It felt secretive and illicit and wrong and we had to hide,” she said of dating a girl when she was younger. “Later on, I had a boyfriend who found out and broke up with me.”
The “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” star admitted she didn’t have the language at the time to identify her sexuality since she was also interested in men.
“Even later on when I had other relationships [with women] I’m not sure I ever thought of them as being potentially forever,” she explained.
“The person I consider my life partner happens to be male, but I think I would feel the same way if it were a woman,” she continued. “I’d feel, ‘This is my life partner.’”
Anderson and Morgan have never confirmed their relationship. They split in 2020 after four years of dating, but then sparked reconciliation rumors during award season in 2021.
She first revealed her relationships with women back in 2012, telling Out magazine, “I was in a relationship with a girl for a long time when I was in high school. Then I was in a relationship with a punk rock drug addict. And then I was in a relationship with somebody who was way, way older than me. Everything that that kind of anarchistic attitude brings — the inappropriate behavior it leads to — was how I chose to be in the world at that time, which was, you know, not what people did.”
Anderson was married to “The X-Files” assistant art director Clyde Klotz from 1994 to 1997, and the documentary filmmaker Julian Ozanne from 2004 to 2006.
