MAGA senator fuels doubt after listing a house he already sold as his home

Republican Sen. Roger Marshall refiled his official home address Friday after Politico caught him listing a house he had already sold.

Politico’s Daniel Lippman reported that Marshall relisted a cabin in the western Kansas town of St. John as his residence. The refiling followed questions Lippman raised about an earlier candidate statement that listed a home Marshall sold in 2021. Marshall’s spokesperson called the earlier listing a clerical error.

The correction sharpens a long-running question about whether Marshall truly lives in Kansas or closer to his family in Florida. Voter records show Marshall’s brother also lists the same cabin address as his residence, according to Lippman. Marshall is now selling the Florida house that first drew that scrutiny.

The two homes could hardly be more different. The Kansas City Star reported in 2024 that the cabin was a house with one bedroom and one bathroom on ranch land the Marshall family has held for decades. Marshall’s spokesperson now says the cabin is a three-bedroom house and shared a public record confirming that.

The Star reported Marshall sold his longtime home 10 days after his January 2021 swearing-in.

Politico first reported that Marshall spent more than $4,500 in taxpayer money on flights and related expenses near his Florida vacation home in Sarasota. Senate expense records show he charged taxpayers for seven trips to Sarasota in 2021, the Star reported. Some of those trips included stops beyond Sarasota.

The Sarasota house dwarfs the cabin. The Star reported that the three-bedroom Florida home spans 1,949 square feet and includes a boat dock on a bayou. It sits a short walk from Sarasota Bay. Two of Marshall’s four adult children live in Sarasota, and his grandkids live nearby.

A revocable trust bought the Sarasota property for $750,000 in June 2019, the Star reported. That purchase came just months before Marshall launched his Senate campaign. Marshall does not take the Florida tax break for permanent residents.

Even Marshall’s own family has joked about how hard he is to locate. In a 2022 Father’s Day post, his daughter wrote that she asked where to send his card. “So I’m just laughing that I don’t even know where to mail him a card that he will actually get in a decent amount of time,” she wrote, according to the Star.

Marshall’s office has defended his residency and his travel. Spokeswoman Charyssa Parent told the Star the Senate rules committee approved the flights as official business that covered military bases and agriculture interests and health care policy meetings. She rejected any suggestion that Marshall does not live in Kansas and called that idea “dishonest and factually inaccurate.”

Parent said Marshall uses the Sarasota house to visit his grandkids over the holidays “like many grandparents.”
