Will full water bottles finally be allowed through airport security?

Last-minute gulps of water at the airport security checkpoint could be a thing of the past for some passengers.

The Transportation Security Administration may allow “trusted travelers” to bring full water bottles through screening at certain airports, according to reports from ABC News and CBS News.

CBS, which cited senior administration officials, said the agency was “actively considering” the move. The restrictions would be eased at airports with updated scanning technology for travelers who are enrolled in the TSA PreCheck program.

In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security did not confirm the reports or share any timing on when a decision might be made.

“TSA will continue to explore opportunities to enhance security and improve the traveling experience for the public,” the statement said. “As technology evolves, TSA’s multi-layered security protocols will evolve including benefits for our most trusted travelers.”

The statement added that any changes to screening policies would be announced through official TSA channels.

Last summer, then-Homeland Security Secretary Kristi L. Noem said an announcement could be forthcoming on the size of liquids travelers could bring through security to carry on planes. Passengers are limited to bottles containing 3.4 ounces of liquid or less in their carry-ons, and those are supposed to fit in a quart-sized bag.

Security experts warned at the time that updated screening technology was not available widely enough to make it possible for every passenger to carry on larger containers of liquids.
