A Trump-aligned prosecutor issued a cryptic warning Friday after abruptly quitting the Justice Department, saying his former team will succeed only “if they are allowed to do their jobs.”
Joe diGenova, who spent five months leading a sprawling investigation into whether federal officials conspired to target President Donald Trump, told NBC News that a specific clash with department leaders led to his resignation. But he refused to reveal what happened.
“The days leading up to my resignation are shrouded in the secrecy of administrative behavior, and they will remain so,” diGenova told the outlet.
A person familiar with the investigation offered NBC News a sharply different account, saying Justice Department leaders had lost confidence in diGenova because they believed he was unfocused, moving too slowly and pursuing a likely unsuccessful path.
But the Trump ally maintained Friday that the investigation had been “going along smoothly” until officials at the Justice Department headquarters became involved.
“Everybody was in their lane, and then some lanes got crossed, and then I decided to leave,” he said, according to NBC News.
The investigation, based in the Southern District of Florida, has focused on the 2016 Russia investigation and the FBI’s 2022 search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
“I want to underscore that we were following the principles of federal prosecution all along the way, and we did that,” diGenova insisted. He added that his team was “moving smartly” before the dispute arose.
“The people in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Florida who are running this case have done a phenomenal job under the worst of circumstances,” diGenova told the outlet. “There’s just no doubt there weren’t sufficient resources.”
He added of his former team: “If they are allowed to do their jobs, they will succeed supremely.”
