President Donald Trump made expansive claims Thursday about what Iran would have done if it had obtained a nuclear weapon, saying it would have “wiped out Israel,” “wiped out the Middle East,” and begun attacking American cities had he not launched the ongoing war.
“They would use it. They’re crazy, OK? I deal with them. They’re crazy,” Trump told Laura Ingraham in an interview airing Thursday on Fox News. “They would have wiped out Israel. They would have wiped out the Middle East, and they would have started hitting a couple of our cities.”
Asked whether he regretted launching a conflict that has become a major political liability ahead of the midterms, Trump replied: “No. I don’t believe in the word regret.”
“You can always question yourself a little bit,” he continued. “If I had it to do again, I’d do exactly as I did.”
Trump also repeated his prediction that the war will “end right after the election” in November. Ingraham, in the interview, asked the president about reports that top advisers believe it could continue into 2029.
“I’m not going to say when, but I think it ends right after the election,” he replied. “They’re limping along. They’re in deep trouble.”
Trump’s puzzling claims outraged political analysts.
“He’s a sociopath. He’s incapable of feeling shame, and he’s incapable of feeling regret,” Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman, posted on X.
“‘Regrets? I’ve had not even a few,’” Michael McGough, a journalist, posted on X, riffing on the Frank Sinatra song, “My Way.”
“Of course he would because his ego doesn’t allow him to admit he’s done a terrible job,” Camille Mackenzie, a political commentator, posted on X.
