President Donald Trump sparked an internet firestorm with comments from his speech at the first night of the GOP midterm convention.
On Wednesday, Trump delivered his headline speech for the Dallas event dubbed “Trumpapalooza” by some commentators. His remarks about the economy and the upcoming midterms were quickly met with online rebuke.
As he has done before recently, Trump hopes to boost Republicans’ chances in the midterms by saying, “I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot. Just one more time.”
Critics of the GOP turned the idea on its head and agreed that voters should imagine Trump’s on the ballot.
“Great! Your approval rating is under 30 percent,” Democratic political strategist Leslie Marshall posted on X.
“And that’s exactly why you’re cooked,” pointed out Democratic politician Isaiah Martin, reacting to Trump’s comment.
“We’re voting you out,” promised Massachusetts Democratic congressional candidate Dan Koh.
“Vote accordingly, America,” suggested Democratic communications strategist Josh Dorner, who cited Trump’s approval rating as 39.6 percent.
“I’m [a Democratic challenger to a Republican incumbent] and I approve this message,” wrote political communications strategist J.J. Abbott.
“Truly one of the most politically self destructive things that any president has ever done,” Pod Save America co-host and political commentator Dan Pfeiffer described Trump’s comment.
Online commentators also made Trump eat his own words when he said, “Our country is going through hell.”
“Yeah, we f— know,” responded political activist and Karoline Leavitt-foe Jamie Bonkiewicz.
“‘Our country is going through hell’ is the perfect slogan for the Republicans this fall,” mocked progressive political commentator Mike Nellis.
“First time he hasn’t lied?” wondered the political news network MeidasTouch.
Others slammed Trump for saying, “This has been the most successful 2 years financially and every other way in the history of the presidency.”
“….for his family,” reacted progressive political analyst Molly Jong-Fast.
“For Trump,” agreed MeidasTouch.
