Democratic Sen. John Fetterman is reportedly preparing to praise President Donald Trump in a video for the Republican Party’s midterm convention Wednesday night.
Fetterman will appear while introducing Republican Sen. Dave McCormick, his fellow Pennsylvania senator, according to an exclusive Axios report. He is expected to credit Trump and McCormick with helping the nation’s steel industry.
The Pennsylvania Democrat’s appearance marks “a dramatic escalation in Fetterman’s growing estrangement from his party,” Axios noted, emphasizing that the stunning twist places a Democratic senator in a supporting role at the GOP’s biggest campaign event with less than eight weeks before the Nov. 3 midterms.
Fetterman is not expected to announce a party switch, sources told the outlet. But he reportedly plans to distance himself from socialism and the Democratic Party’s left wing.
But the move is certain to trigger questions about whether Fetterman could eventually leave his party before his reelection in 2028.
“It’s also a major coup for Trump, who has long reveled at the idea of winning over former Democrats to his side,” Axios added Wednesday.
The cameo was reportedly arranged with the help of McCormick. Fetterman has increasingly broken with Democrats while warming to Trump, particularly through his outspoken support for Israel.
Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman, skewered Fetterman for his appearance.
“Hey @JohnFetterman, this is just wrong. You need help,” Walsh wrote on X. “And actually, it doesn’t sound like you’re even coming close to doing your job as a United States Senator. You need to resign. And then get help. But this is wrong.”
