Tiny Love Stories: ‘A Year of Nakedness Between Us’

Second Sight

We were new lovers in old bodies, meeting as we neared 80. “You’re beautiful,” he told me, his long limbs entwined around my naked body. “I’m old,” I said, fearful. He took my hand and gently led me to the bathroom mirror. Both of us faced forward, his arm around my waist. Ashamed, I shut my eyes against my sagging, wrinkled reflection. One year later, a year of nakedness between us, he led me to the mirror again. This time my eyes remained open. This time I was beautiful. This time — old and smitten — we were beautiful together. — Margaret Grundstein

Rupture for Repair

It’s been a while, but there was a day, hour, moment I knew I loved you. You were closeted. I was not. When you tried to pull me back into the closet just enough so that you wouldn’t be outed, I walked out of your place. You followed, in flip-flops, dragging your poor old pug alongside you. The sound of your frantic steps behind me, unable to keep up, broke my heart and made me realize how much love it held for you. Something in you broke too: Within a week, you came out, marking the beginning of our forever. — Jennifer Robbins Mullin

Lost Son Found

In early 2019, Dad learned that more remains were identified as belonging to my brother, Michael Boyle, an F.D.N.Y. firefighter killed on 9/11. Dad directed that his remains be held. For what, we didn’t know. Dad succumbed to cancer in October 2019, one month after he attended the annual 9/11 ceremonies for the last time. He heard Michael’s name being read at the World Trade Center, went to Mass and was serenaded by the Emerald Society under the blue tribute lights ascending into the sky. Suddenly clear: Michael’s remains were held so that he and Dad could be buried together. — Jeanne Arnold

Accepting Every Meme

My son lives in Denver with his mother, my ex-wife. I live in Salt Lake City. He sends me superhero memes. I respond with Gen Alpha slang like “rizz.” He sends eye roll emojis. “Who says that anymore unc?” he writes. I’m desperate to bond with this funny 13-year-old, so I’ll text until he tires of texting. At 4 p.m., a few minutes after he gets out of school, the first meme pings on my phone. I know he’s waiting for my reaction so he can call me “cringe.” Or “Ohio.” His way of saying, “I miss you.” — Ranjan Adiga
