Even the Wall Street Journal’s conservative editorial board has seen enough, warning in a blunt column that President Donald Trump may be about to cost Republicans the Senate.
The fed-up board drew a direct line to Georgia in 2021, when Trump’s stolen-election lie helped hand Democrats two runoff seats and the majority.
Republicans can afford to lose no more than three seats, and the board flagged at least six GOP-held races in serious jeopardy, including in Alaska, Ohio, Texas and Iowa, states that were comfortably red not long ago. Even Kansas and Nebraska, it wrote, aren’t safe.
Much of that damage, the board noted, is self-inflicted.
Trump’s approval sits under 40%, and he is underwater on the economy, inflation and even immigration, as tariff retaliation batters the Farm Belt and deportation roundups drag on Sen. Susan Collins in Maine.
Trump has also knifed his own incumbents, pushing Sen. Thom Tillis into retirement, all but forfeiting North Carolina, and backed scandal-plagued Ken Paxton over Sen. John Cornyn in Texas, turning a safe seat into a costly brawl with Democrat James Talarico.
“Mr. Trump has also hurt the party by meddling to oust electable GOP incumbents who weren’t as deferential as he likes,” the editors bemoaned.
He has also spent months trashing his own Senate leaders, including Majority Leader John Thune, which the board lamented hands conservative voters an excuse to stay home, just as they did in Georgia.
Rather than a forward-looking pitch on the economy or reform, the board noted, Trump is fixated on vanity projects like the White House ballroom and a planned Trump arch in Washington, the kind of thing swing voters shrug off heading into November.
“The campaign still has two months to run, and Republicans might be able to avoid a Senate wipeout. But if they do lose their majority, Mr. Trump will find his Presidency in a two-year state of siege, and he’ll be the main reason,” the board concluded.
