Grand Theft Porter: Thieves Steal 800 Barrels of Guinness in Britain

The police in the county of Cheshire in northwestern England are investigating the theft of two trailers of Guinness beer from an industrial park.

Two trucks entered the depot on Monday and hauled away trailers containing 800 barrels of the creamy dark stout, the authorities said.

“It is famously said that ‘Guinness is good for you,’ but that is only the case when it has been bought and paid for,” Detective Sgt. Gary McClatchey of the Cheshire Constabulary said in a statement on Thursday.

The police will settle for “nothing less than the full recovery of all the items stolen,” he added.

Diageo, the British beverage company that owns Guinness, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesman for the Cheshire police said on Friday that there were no updates in the investigation.

Precisely what the thieves planned to do with their large stash of stout was unclear. The police said the value of the stolen beer was 115,000 pounds, or about $155,000.

The truck drivers were believed to men, the police said. They appealed for any witnesses to come forward and for motorists to review dashboard camera footage in hopes of catching the brew burglars.

The theft came on the heels of another high-profile beer heist in the United States. Last month, Pabst Blue Ribbon said that 40,000 pounds of its beer had been stolen from a distribution center in Montclair, Calif., a haul that the local police said was worth $25,000.

Pabst offered a reward on social media to anyone who helped them recover the lost beer.
