Bringing Explosive Life to ‘Coyote vs. Acme’

In “Anatomy of a Scene,” we ask directors to reveal the secrets that go into making key scenes in their movies. For additional episodes, watch our collection of more than 350 videos on YouTube and subscribe to our YouTube channel.

Wile E. Coyote’s actions speak more bombastically than words in this scene from “Coyote vs. Acme.”

After being the victim of countless anvils, boulders, dynamite sticks and faulty Acme products, Coyote is fed up. He goes searching for representation and finds a barely qualified injury attorney named Kevin Avery (Will Forte). Coyote has an expressive (and ultimately explosive) exchange with Kevin in his office.

Narrating the scene, the director Dave Green discussed how he and his team put it all together. “The execution of the scene,” he said, “really begins in prep in the storyboard process.” Green’s story artists, using the script, would sketch out how Wile E. might look and respond in the scene, creating a sense of his emotional arc.

The storyboard sketches were brought to the team’s puppeteer, Dave Barclay, who created a life-size Wile E. Coyote puppet that the live-action actors interacted with on the set. For the final scene, the puppet was replaced with the animated Coyote.

Green said that when he was first discussing the scene with his screenwriter, Samy Burch, the Chris Farley-David Spade comedy “Tommy Boy” came up. In it, Farley’s character is in an office enthusiastically trying to sell brake parts, leading to a desperate demonstration. “It’s like, one of the most iconic moments in comedic storytelling,” Green said. That was the impetus for Coyote’s outsize reaction in this sequence, which leads to the character leaving a law office in shambles.
