Lindsay Clancy Was a Nurse Who ‘Always Wanted to Be a Mother’

Before Lindsay Clancy became a polarizing symbol — the face of unspeakable evil to some; the sympathetic victim of a failed health care system to others — she was a young suburban mother, seemingly living her dream.

She had a job she loved, as a labor and delivery nurse at a prestigious Boston hospital, and a husband who worked from home and pitched in with the kids. Most importantly, she had the growing family she had long desired, their giggles and art projects filling her blue-shingled home in Duxbury, Mass.

“She always wanted to be a mother and have many children,” Ms. Clancy’s mother, Paula Musgrove, testified at her trial.

Ms. Clancy, 36, grew up in Connecticut, a gymnast and diligent student, according to the testimony of people who knew her. Her aim was to excel at motherhood, and she often sought advice, said Margaret Hamp, a nurse who worked the night shift with Ms. Clancy at Massachusetts General Hospital. She sought colleagues’ insights on toddler sleep schedules, how to choose a day care center and the pros and cons of monogrammed lunchboxes.

From the start, she could be an anxious parent. Late one night at work, Ms. Clancy checked an online camera app to see her then-infant daughter, Cora, crying in her crib, Ms. Hamp testified. When her husband did not answer his phone, Ms. Clancy called the police to check on her family.

Later, she acknowledged struggling with her middle child, Dawson, calling him “the most difficult human” in a Facebook parents’ group. “EVERY. SINGLE. THING with him is a battle,” she wrote.

Ms. Clancy was highly organized, drafting detailed schedules for her children’s meals and naps — a trait that prosecutors seized on at trial to paint her as controlling and manipulative. She prioritized staying fit, running 5K races and working out on a Peloton at home.

On the job, Ms. Hamp said, Ms. Clancy was “compassionate, an advocate, the kind of nurse you wanted taking care of you.” She could be emotional when assisting at a birth, Ms. Hamp recalled: “She would say, ‘That was so beautiful.’”

When her daughter, Cora, was born in 2017, Ms. Clancy named her after the first baby she had ever helped deliver, her former husband, Patrick Clancy, testified.

As her family grew, Ms. Clancy lamented that she could not lavish as much attention on each child, according to her journal.

Yet she also noted that she still hoped to have a fourth child — if she could improve her mental health.
