Catch Up Fast Before the Conclusion of the Lindsay Clancy Trial

The trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts woman accused of murdering her three children, appears to be near an end after a month of emotional testimony, though it’s unclear whether the closely watched case will actually reach a resolution.

Ms. Clancy, 36, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, with her lawyers arguing she was in the throes of postpartum psychosis. Prosecutors disputed Ms. Clancy’s mental condition, arguing that she had carefully planned the killings.

The jury of nine women and three men is deliberating for a sixth day, after twice telling the court it remained deadlocked. A mistrial is the likely next step if the jurors cannot reach a verdict on Thursday. Here’s what you need to know in the meantime.

Who is Lindsay Clancy?

A former labor and delivery nurse at a Boston hospital, Ms. Clancy, 36, experienced postpartum anxiety after giving birth to all three of her children. She sought treatment from a team of clinicians who prescribed her more than a dozen medications. After the birth of her third child, lawyers say, a persistent male voice encouraged her to kill her children and herself.

What happened to her children?

Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months, were choked to death by exercise bands on Jan. 24, 2023, in the basement of the family’s home in Duxbury, Mass. Ms. Clancy’s husband at the time returned from picking up dinner to find Cora and Dawson dead; Callan would die days later. Ms. Clancy had cut her wrists and neck and jumped out of a second-flood window, leaving her paralyzed.

What could happen to her?

Jurors had the choice of finding Ms. Clancy guilty of first-degree murder, second-degree murder or manslaughter. She would face a sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted of first-degree murder. Conviction on a lesser charge — second-degree murder or manslaughter — would most likely involve substantial prison time, but with the possibility of parole. If found not guilty by reason of insanity, Ms. Clancy would most likely be committed to a secure state psychiatric facility.

Why is the case getting so much attention?

The children’s horrific deaths, and prosectors’ decision to charge Ms. Clancy with murder, have revived a long-running debate about how the legal system should treat mentally ill mothers who kill their children. It has also renewed attention around postpartum mental health, and the uneven support that many American parents receive after having a baby.
