President Donald Trump tried to bring his signature business move into geopolitics.
The 80-year-old president made a career out of slapping his name onto towers, hotels and golf courses – a move he’s brought to Washington, D.C., in his second term – and he proposed renaming the Strait of Hormuz to signal the U.S. had gained control of the crucial waterway.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump posted Wednesday morning on Truth Social. “Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!”
However, the strait remains treacherous to commercial shipping traffic as Iran continues to retaliate against U.S. strikes in the war Trump launched Feb. 28.
Iran launched missiles and drones toward U.S. positions in response to a new round of strikes inside Iran after weeks of ceasefire, and two oil tankers in the strait were struck Monday by unknown projectiles.
Shipping traffic in the strait remains far below the pre-war average, and since the fighting resumed, the price of Brent crude oil has climbed above $95, up more than 30 percent from the start of the war.
