Mike Minogue Wins G.O.P. Nomination for Governor in Massachusetts

Mike Minogue, a former medical technology executive with conservative views, won the Republican nomination for governor of Massachusetts, The Associated Press said on Tuesday night.

He defeated Brian Shortsleeve, a former state transportation official with more moderate views.

Mr. Minogue will face Gov. Maura Healey, a Democrat seeking a second term, in the general election. A poll last month by the University of New Hampshire showed Ms. Healey with large lead over Mr. Minogue in a head-to-head matchup.

Massachusetts, a strongly Democrat state, also has a long track record of electing moderate Republican governors. Before Ms. Healey took office in 2023, Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, served two terms. From 1991 to 2007, Republicans held the governor’s office without interruption.

This election cycle, though, widespread frustration with President Trump has hampered Republican candidates. Both Mr. Minogue and Mr. Shortsleeve acknowledged voting for Mr. Trump in 2024.

Conservatives in the state have derided Ms. Healey’s leadership, and particularly what they describe as her lenient stance on undocumented immigrants. Last month, after Ms. Healey signed legislation that bars Immigration and Customs Enforcement from making warrantless arrests in courthouses, schools and hospitals, state Republicans said she had put “politics over public safety.”

Mr. Minogue, an Army veteran who served in the Iraq War, has said that he would end policies that allow undocumented immigrants to receive public benefits and work to facilitate the deportation of “criminal illegal immigrants.”

He has also criticized policies in support of transgender athletes.

He spent 19 years as president and chief executive of Abiomed, Inc., a medical device firm headquartered in Danvers, Mass. The company was sold to Johnson & Johnson for $17 billion in 2022.
