‘Paranoid’ Hegseth took aim at Army boss over ‘suspicious’ ties to Vance: insider

More details are trickling out after Army Secretary Dan Driscoll’s sudden resignation Monday, which caught Washington by surprise.

While earlier reports centered on Driscoll’s contentious clashes with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over Pentagon “modernization,” Axios is now reporting the former Fox News personality kept Driscoll in a state of paranoia throughout his tenure.

Driscoll recently spoke with President Donald Trump and expressed concerns about the state of the Army, according to Axios. One official described the situation simply: “Sad.” A White House official said Driscoll was asked to stay on until after the midterms, but he told the White House he felt it was time to go — an unusually quick exit for a Cabinet-level official less than two years into the administration.

Driscoll had been considered a rising star in the administration, earning the nickname “drone guy” for his modernization push and winning confirmation with the support of 16 Democrats, Axios is reporting. But his relationship with Hegseth soured badly. U.S. officials told Axios the defense secretary “was suspicious and paranoid” toward Driscoll, in part because of Driscoll’s close friendship with Vice President JD Vance, his Yale Law classmate.

The friction reportedly extended beyond personalities: Axios also linked Driscoll’s exit to “frustration” over Hegseth’s firing of senior generals and roadblocks thrown up against Driscoll’s modernization agenda, leaving the Army without Senate-confirmed leadership during ongoing military operations.

The timing is notable given recent reports that Hegseth is weighing a 2028 presidential run — reports he has publicly called “100% false” — which would put him in direct competition with Vance, widely seen as the current GOP frontrunner.
