CNN’s Audie Cornish called out Vice President JD Vance and other Republicans for condoning right-wing influencer Laura Loomer’s racist remarks while smearing left-wing commentators as antisemitic.
The Donald Trump ally drew widespread criticism for attacking Florida Democratic Senate nominee Angie Nixon and other prominent Black U.S. politicians as “ghetto,” and the “CNN This Morning” host asked why some Republicans were comfortable condemning Loomer’s remarks but Vance and others had not.
“Marjorie Taylor Greene says Trump, quote, ‘owns’ Loomer and her nonstop vitriol, writing, ‘when will the president and the Republican Party reject her and her hateful, racist behaviors? They refuse, which tells you everything you need to know.’”
“I wanted to talk about this because this story, as it was breaking, Loomer also tweeted, ‘Hey, there wasn’t any press allowed into this Republican Jewish Coalition meeting, and Vance got me in,’ and I was like, what?” Cornish added. “Like, I was checking time stamps to be, like, I’m confused. This person who is saying the most racist things imaginable is going to go into this meeting where Vance is going to be asked why he’s platforming online influencers who spew hate.”
Loomer claimed Monday night that she’d been offered a last-minute invitation from Vance to the off-the-record, closed-door event, and Cornish questioned her role and proximity to the administration.
“I’m going to put up a full screen here of people that she claims to have gotten fired,” Cornish said. “Yeah, you know what I mean? So I’m not talking about a random online influencer. [She has ties to] the security apparatus – NSA, CIA. So why are they not denouncing her? Where are the – there’s this weird thing where Republicans want to be basically moral arbiters on the issue of antisemitism.”
Republicans have successfully turned popular left-wing streamer Hasan Piker into a political cudgel due to his criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza, and Cornish asked why his statements should be an issue but Loomer’s are not.
“Somehow this part, somehow racism is a card to be played and not to be taken seriously,” she said. “How do you do both? How do you rush into the breach to tell Jews and the Democratic Party, we’re here for you, but we’re not here for these other people. We’re going to call them dogs.”
