The mental health and substance use organization the Trimbos Institute issued a “red alert” Friday after discovering a batch of ecstasy pills shaped like the head of President Donald Trump that contained a potentially lethal substance, a discovery that critics were quick to flag as ironic.
The pills depict the face of Trump on one side, and his last name branded on the other. Far more concerning to the Trimbos Institute, however, was that the pills contained a “high concentration of a chemical called PMMA, or para-methoxymethamphetamine,” a chemical similar to MDMA, the synthetic drug often found in ecstasy.
“Absolutely do not use these pills,” the institute warned, according to CBS News. “We do not know of any victims where PMMA was found in their blood.”
Kelly Cameron, a writer and disability activist, characterized the discovery as ironic given the Trump administration’s deregulation of the food and medicine sectors.
“Trump has overseen deregulation of the food and medical supply resulting in huge numbers of potentially lethal contaminations across the US,” Cameron wrote Saturday in a social media post on X. “It’s only fitting that a pill made in his likeness might be poison as well.”
Rex Jones, the son of far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, joked that “they must be taking these in the White House with how cracked out they are,” and Andy Corbett, a senior lecturer in defense studies at King’s College in London, quipped about the pill’s potential similarities to Trump.
“They over-promise, fail to deliver and leave a bitter aftertaste?” Corbett wrote Saturday in a social media post on X.
