“The Odyssey,” an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem from Christopher Nolan, has surpassed “Deadpool & Wolverine” to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
In 2024, “Deadpool & Wolverine” ended its box office run with a worldwide total of $1.338 billion. But last week, “The Odyssey” surpassed that amount. After this past weekend’s screenings, “The Odyssey” stands at $1.446 billion in ticket sales worldwide, according to figures from box office data site the Numbers.
A movie with an R rating requires any individual under age 17 to attend with their parent or adult guardian. “The Odyssey” was rated R for “violence and some language” by the Motion Picture Association.
“The Odyssey,” which follows Greek hero Odysseus (Matt Damon) as he spends years trying to get back home to the island of Ithaca after winning the Trojan War, opened with $123.5 million at the domestic box office. It has earned $539 million stateside since it opened July 17, on a reported budget of $250 million, plus an estimated $125 million in marketing.
