Trump’s new tariffs on Canada will hit everything from whisky to hockey sticks

Trump’s new tariffs on Canada will hit everything from whisky to hockey sticks

Crown Royal whisky, goose down jackets, ice-hockey equipment and a long list of other Canadian goods could become much more expensive for American consumers.

An array of imports are subject to new 50 percent tariffsSaturday after U.S.-Canada trade talks collapsed. Negotiators had worked for weeks to reach a deal to avoid the tariffs, which President Donald Trump announced last month.

The trade war began last year, when Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian goods for what he said was a failure to prevent illicit fentanyl from entering the United States. In turn, officials in most Canadian provinces removed U.S. wine and spirits from government-run stores and placed tariffs on some U.S. products.

The Trump administration accused Canada of “discriminating” against the U.S. alcohol, auto and dairy industries, and is now targeting Canadian imports in some of those categories with the new 50 percent tariffs.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called the new U.S. tariffs “a miscalculation” and vowed to match them “dollar for dollar.” Retaliatory tariffs against the United States will go into effect Sept. 8, Carney said.

Tariffs are taxes that American businesses pay to import foreign goods, and are often passed along to consumers in the form of raised prices.

Here are some of the Canadian products affected by the new U.S. tariffs.

Alcohol

A wide variety of Canadian alcohol is subject to the new tariffs, including malt beer, sparkling wine, fermented cider, sake, rum, brandy, vodka and whisky. Popular Canadian brands include Crown Royal whisky, Forty Creek, Canadian Club, Empress 1908 Gin and Yukon Jack.

It’s not the first time alcohol has become entangled in a trade war between the two countries. Canada retaliated against Trump’s tariffs in 2025, when officials in most Canadian provinces removed U.S. wine and spirits from government-run stores.

Dairy products

Many dairy products are now subject to the new 50 percent tariffs, including milk and cream in almost all forms, as well as lactose and lactose syrup. Canadian cheese is not included, despite Trump saying he was instituting the tariffs in part as a response to Canada’s “discrimination” against U.S. cheeses.

Ice-hockey and other athletic equipment

Sticks, gloves and other equipment for ice hockey, one of Canada’s two national sports, will be subject to the new tariffs. The list also includes a range of other athletic gear, including field-hockey equipment, ice skates that have footwear permanently attached, swimming pool parts, fishing rods and golf gear.

Toys, clothing and Christmas decorations

The increased prices of several products on the tariff lists could be more acutely felt heading into the holiday season, including for clothing and fabrics, video game consoles and machines, toys, puzzles and Christmas decorations.

Furniture, antiques, household items

Looking to renovate your home or backyard? You may have to pay more. The new tariffs will apply to furniture, lighting fixtures, various tools, fence components, lumber, wood moldings and a variety of plywood, fiberboard and veneered panels. Tariffs will also apply to antiques that are between 100 and 250 years old.
