What parents need to know about ‘Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie’ and more

Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie (PG)

Age 6+

Canine heroes meet dinos in engaging but perilous adventure.

Based on Nickelodeon’s beloved preschool-targeted animated series, this big-screen adventure sees Ryder (voiced by Henry Bolan) and his canine crew discover a mysterious island full of dinosaurs. The Paw Patrol movies have had plenty of rescue action, but things get a bit more intense here, with dogs and other animals frequently in peril amid river rapids, a dinosaur stampede and a volcano that spews fireballs and lava. A main character is briefly knocked out, and a family has to be saved from a flaming boat. A big storm hits the pups’ ship, and one character searches for a missing friend in the jungle at night. There’s little iffy content beyond that (language is limited to a few uses of words such as “crazy,” “butt” and “stinky”), and you can expect lots of kid-friendly messages about courage, perseverance, teamwork and learning from mistakes. (88 minutes)

Available in theaters.

The End of Oak Street (PG-13)

Age 14+

An intense, bloody and overly familiar dinosaur thriller.

Set in 1982, this intense science-fiction thriller follows a suburban neighborhood that’s suddenly transported back to a time when deadly dinosaurs roamed. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor play feuding parents who try to keep their two kids safe from the terrifying predators. Be ready for lots of dinosaur threats and attacks: The large, scary beasts snatch and eat people, chomp at body parts (including a head) and drag off bloody bodies. People use weapons against them: a knife, a fireplace poker, a sledgehammer, a baseball bat, arrows and a gun. There’s also bullying, slapping, shouting and arguing. A fairly graphic (but comical) scene shows two dinosaurs mating. A boy also looks at an adult magazine, and characters hug and kiss. Language includes one use of “f—ing,” as well as “s—,” “sons of b—-es,” “a–” and “oh my God.” A main character secretly drinks from a hidden bottle of whiskey, and there’s brief dialogue about kids smoking and drinking. (99 minutes)

Available in theaters.

Insidious: Out of the Further (PG-13)

Age 14+

Jump scares can’t reenergize worn-out horror franchise.

The sixth film in the horror franchise mostly overhauls the cast while introducing a new protagonist: Gemma (Amelia Eve), a mother who must protect herself and her daughter from an evil entity when nightmares start to enter real life. There’s murder and suicide, and other disturbing content includes jump scares, icky noises, smeared blood, head bashing, throat slicing, a fingernail getting yanked off, gunfire and a child in peril. There’s a bit of romance and a brief kiss. Infrequent language includes a use of “f—,” plus “s—,” “a–,” “b—-,” “screw,” “hell,” “Jesus” and “frickin’.” (106 minutes)

Available in theaters.

Lanterns (TV-MA)

Age 15+

Language and bloody violence in DC Comics superhero series.

This DC Comics series, starring Kyle Chandler as Green Lantern and Aaron Pierre as his trainee, combines elements of superhero tales (special powers, otherworldly threats, sci-fi violence) with detective dramas (a murder mystery, sleuthing partners). We see the aftermath of a mass murder, with bloody bodies strewn across a football field, and characters use guns. Two people who’ve just met have sex in a car, with rhythmic movements and moaning (but no nudity), and one of them smokes a cigarette afterward. Infrequent language includes “f—,” “s—,” “damn,” “a–,” “goddamn” and “hell.” People drink heavily in bars, and one character’s alcohol habit is referred to regularly. (Seven episodes)

Available on HBO Max.
