7 Signs the Person You’re Seeing Is Breadcrumbing You

Breadcrumbing is one of those things that’s hard to name while it’s happening to you. The relationship feels like something. There’s heat, there’s history, there’s the occasional perfect night that makes you wonder if you’re meant to be together. Then another week passes, and you haven’t heard from them.

Breadcrumbing is when someone gives you just enough to stay—a text here, a like there, a reference to plans you’ll never actually make—without any intention of showing up for real. A 2025 paper in the Advances in Social Sciences Research Journal compares it to intermittent reinforcement — the occasional, unpredictable reward that keeps people engaged long after they know better. Slot machines work the same way. So does a late-night “hey stranger.”

Here are seven signs you’re in one.

1. They only resurface when you’re finally moving on

You finally stop checking your phone obsessively. You make plans with someone else. You feel okay for the first time in a while. Then they text—casual, warm, like nothing happened. This isn’t a coincidence. It’s the biggest defining move of breadcrumbing: reappearing the moment someone starts to pull away, just in time to reset the whole thing.

2. They talk about the future like it’s a guarantee and the present like a suggestion

“We should go there sometime.” “You’d love my friends.” “Next month, let’s totally do this.” The words feel warm but have zero follow-through. There are no actual dates, no actual times, no actual plans. As long as everything stays hypothetical, there’s no risk. Breadcrumbers are often more comfortable in the fantasy of a relationship than in the reality of one.

3. They ghost and return like nothing happened

One week of nothing, then a breezy “hey, how are you” with zero acknowledgment that a week just passed. No explanation. People who are capable of real intimacy communicate when they pull back. Breadcrumbers expect you to deal with the silence and smile when they return, every single time.

4. They’re present in your notifications and absent from your life

They watch every story and react to your posts. They know what’s happening in your life in the same way a stranger who follows you online does—as a passive observer. A 2025 UK study found that exposure to breadcrumbing was linked to reduced perceived social support and increased psychological distress. Likes are not intimacy. They just look like it.

5. You’ve started questioning your own read on reality

You replay conversations looking for clues. You screenshot messages and send them to friends for analysis. You’ve talked yourself into and out of the same conclusion a dozen times. This is one of the less-discussed effects of breadcrumbing: it erodes your ability to trust your own instincts. The chronic ambiguity is, for many people, more destabilizing than rejection would have been.

6. The relationship only works on their terms

When they want connection, they’re available. When they don’t, they aren’t. You have no say in the schedule. A 2023 cross-country study found that people with anxious attachment were disproportionately likely to find themselves in this position, and that being breadcrumbed made that anxiety worse over time. It feeds on the people who are least equipped to walk away from it.

7. You’ve started defending them to yourself more than they’ve ever defended themselves to you

They’re stressed. They’re bad at texting. They’ve been through a lot. The list of reasons why their behavior is acceptable has gotten long and elaborate, and you built it in your head. This is what the Tochkov paper describes as the emotional cost falling completely on the recipient, while the breadcrumber extracts validation and control with none of the corresponding accountability. Defending someone who isn’t present for the conversation is exhausting. You don’t notice it until you’re already depleted.
