One of President Donald Trump’s most striking 2024 gains is evaporating just months before the midterms, according to CNN’s Harry Enten.
Hispanic men delivered a historically strong performance for Trump in that election, backing him over Kamala Harris by 10 points. But in an average of polls taken this year, Trump’s net approval rating among that group has plunged to 41 points underwater — a swing of roughly 51 points against the president.
“The phrase this morning for President Trump is ay caramba, because look at these shifts,” Enten said. “He goes into the Gulf of Mexico.”
The erosion is even steeper on the issue that fueled his 2024 gains with the group – the economy. Hispanic men trusted Trump over Harris on the economy by 11 points heading into the last election. Now, his net approval on the economy among that group sits 49 points underwater, a 60-point reversal on the very issue that helped swing Hispanic men toward Republicans in the first place.
“All of that movement, all that hard work that Republicans made and did for the 2024 election, it all is just basically gone at this point,” Enten said, describing the shift as “a huge swing back against the Republican president.”
Enten cautioned that disapproval alone doesn’t guarantee a change in votes, but the numbers suggest this one will. On the generic congressional ballot, Republicans won Hispanic men by 8 points in 2024. Now Democrats lead the group by 20 points — a 28-point swing.
“If you’re a Republican running for re-election … and you think you’re going to escape the wrath that President Trump has now amongst Hispanic men, you are sorely, sorely mistaken,” Enten said. “These are bonkers shifts, and Democrats have to really like these numbers.”
