‘End of the road’ for Trump as Supreme Court slaps down $5.6 million appeal

The Supreme Court rejected President Donald Trump’s last-ditch effort to avoid paying E. Jean Carroll $5.6 million.

The justices on Monday denied his request to reconsider their earlier refusal in June to hear his appeal, and there were no noted dissents, reported CNN.

His attorneys then asked for a rehearing — a request the court rarely grants. Trump had already paid Carroll the $5.6 million under a lower court order; her lawyers said the money would sit in an interest-bearing account until the rehearing request was resolved.

“Now this money is in the hands of E. Jean Carroll unrestricted for her to use as she wishes,” reported CNN’s Kara Scannell. “This is the end of the road as far as this appeal goes on this case, a long journey for E. Jean Carroll to get her hands on the money that the jury had awarded her three years ago. So the road for Trump, as far as making further appeals here on this case, is done.”

The case traces to 2019, when Carroll first sued Trump for defamation. She sued again in 2022 for defamation and battery after New York passed a law allowing sexual abuse victims to bring civil claims over past incidents. That 2022 case went to trial first, and a jury awarded her $5 million. The 2019 case went to trial next and produced an $83 million judgment, which remains separately pending before the Supreme Court.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and argued the trial judge erred by letting jurors hear from two other women who accused him of assault, plus the 2005 “Access Hollywood” recording of Trump on a hot mic describing grabbing women by the genitals without consent.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the $5 million verdict last year, finding no errors warranting a new trial. Trump’s bid for a full appeals court review failed in June 2025, prompting his Supreme Court appeal.

A Trump legal team spokesperson called the case a “Democrat-funded travesty” and vowed Trump would “keep winning against Liberal Lawfare.”
