Johnny Depp might reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow for the forthcoming “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie.
“We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Deadline at D23.
Additional insiders told the outlet that the sixth movie in the blockbuster franchise will focus on actress Margot Robbie’s protagonist, with Depp returning as a side character.
A rep for Depp wasn’t immediately available to Page Six for comment.
Depp first starred as Sparrow in the 2003 Gore Verbinski-directed film “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” alongside Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann.
He continued his role in the movie’s 2006 sequel, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” and the third film of the franchise, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” released in 2007.
Depp also appeared in 2011’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” and wrapped up his role as Sparrow in the 2017 movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.”
While the last film in the series had a noticeable dip from the previous installment, the franchise as a whole has banked more than $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office in five films, according to The Numbers.
While a sixth movie has been discussed for years, scriptwriter Stuart Beattie hinted in 2018 that Depp would be retiring from his iconic role.
“I think he’s had a great run,” Beattie told DailyMailTV. “Obviously, he’s made that character his own and it’s become the character he’s most famous for now.”
“And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think it’s been great for him, it’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it. I think Jack Sparrow will be his legacy. It’s the only character he’s played five times.”
Depp, meanwhile, is playing Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming film, “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,” which will be released on Nov. 13.
He appeared unrecognizable while stepping out in character at San Diego Comic-Con in July.
Depp’s forthcoming role will mark his first major film since winning his 2022 defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard, whom he was married to from 2015 to 2017.
Depp had sued the “Aquaman” actress for alluding to him being abusive towards her in a 2018 op-ed for The Washington Post. He was awarded $1 million.
