President Donald Trump tried to intimidate the financial system into giving him all the services he wants, but MSNBC’s Ari Melber was left stunned by the result.
Specifically, when Trump sued Capital One, alleging he was being discriminated against for his political views, the institution hit back, revealing that it had actually had to exclude him due to suspicious patterns that could indicate money laundering.
“Capital One had to close basically 300 bank accounts linked to the Trump Org” in 2021, Melber, himself an attorney by trade, noted. “And that was because of the idea that there were money laundering rules violated. This is a serious process. The bank’s financial crimes team, with decades of law enforcement experience, made that call.”
None of this would have even been known to voters, he said, if the Trump Organization had not sued and claimed that January 6 was the actual reason they were debanked.
Above all, said Melber, “we have the receipts to show at least the rule violations that concern whether or not actual money laundering occurred have not really been litigated.”
The good news for Trump, though, is that his administration is unlikely to do anything about this, Melber said.
That’s because they are “gutting a law that is supposed to deal with shady shell companies that are used for money laundering, which is suspicious,” he said. “There are more and more comparisons to Putin.”
