F.D.A. Classifies Egg Recall as Class I, for Highest Health Risk

The Food and Drug Administration this week gave an egg recall that started last month over salmonella concerns its highest-risk designation, meaning that eating the eggs could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

Midwest Poultry Services voluntarily recalled 19 million eggs in July “as a precautionary measure,” the company said.

The white-shell and brown cage-free shell eggs were sold under several brand names at grocery stores in six states. The company began the recall after samples collected at farms in Texas tested positive for salmonella.

Nearly 100 cases of salmonella were reported in 17 states, starting on Nov. 21, 2025, through June 30, 2026, the F.D.A. said last month. The agency said there had been 26 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported.

The F.D.A. on Wednesday designated the recall Class I, its highest designation.

A representative for Midwest Poultry Services on Friday referred to a statement from Emily Metz, president and chief executive of the American Egg Board.

“What you’re seeing in the news today is not a new recall,” the statement said. “Midwest Poultry voluntarily recalled affected eggs out of an abundance of caution for consumer health and safety, and that recall is already complete.”

The F.D.A. said the company’s eggs did not account for all the illnesses in the salmonella outbreak.

“Additional investigation is ongoing to determine if there are other sources of illness,” the agency said last month.

The F.D.A. noted that recall classification is done after determining the risk to the public and “should not be seen as an expansion or change to a firm’s voluntary public warning.”
