Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said Friday he does not support Rep. Cory Mills (R-Florida), who faces three GOP challengers in a primary Tuesday.
Mills, 46, is running for a third term in Congress under a cloud of controversy, including an ethics investigation into possible domestic violence, which Mills denies.
“I have not endorsed Cory Mills, and I do not support Cory Mills,” DeSantis told reporters Friday during a visit to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, near Florida’s 7th Congressional District, which Mills represents.
DeSantis is not the first Florida Republican to come out against Mills in the primary. Reps. Anna Paulina Luna and Mike Haridopolos have pledged their support to Ryan Elijah, a former news anchor who is one of Mills’s primary opponents.
“We need leaders in Congress who serve with integrity, energy, and an unwavering commitment to the people who sent them there,” Luna wrote in a social media post backing Elijah earlier this month.
The House Ethics Committee is investigating “serious and complex” allegations against Mills, including possible domestic violence and campaign finance violations.
Last February, D.C. police responded to a report that Mills had assaulted a woman. In October, a Florida judge granted an order of protection against Mills in favor of an ex-girlfriend who accused him of threatening her with revenge porn. Mills denied any wrongdoing in connection with the claims.
