Ryan Murphy reveals Jessica Lange’s 1 condition to returning for ‘American Horror Story’ Season 13

“American Horror Story” fans are getting another iconic musical number from Jessica Lange in Season 13.

Co-creator Ryan Murphy talked about how he got Lange, 77, to reprise all four of her “American Horror Story” characters in the upcoming season and revealed that she agreed on one condition — that she gets to sing.

“I just thought the number 13 was infused with so much stuff in the horror genre, and I wanted to do a greatest hits season,” he told Vogue in an article published Wednesday.

“I didn’t know what it was, but I knew that I could only do it with Jessica. So we had dinner … and I pitched her, and she said, ‘Great. I’m in as long as I have a musical number.’”

Murphy told the magazine that the legendary actress was a must-have for season 13, which is bringing back classic characters from across the entire series to fight an ultimate evil.

“I think when you have a show like ‘American Horror Story’ that has become so long-running and popular, you go back to the origin story of it,” he explained. “And Jessica, that first season, won every award on Earth.”

Lange won two Emmys for her work on the series, including outstanding supporting actress in a miniseries or movie in 2012 for “American Horror Story: Murder House,” and outstanding lead actress in a miniseries or movie in 2014 for “American Horror Story: Coven.”

She also won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress as well as a Screen Actors Guild award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series — both in 2012— for her portrayal as Constance Langdon in the first season of the show, “American Horror Story: Murder House.”

Lange previously shared she was “done”with the show after being a main character in four seasons back to back.

“We’ve had a great run,” she said at PaleyFest back in March 2015. “I have absolutely loved doing these four characters, and in all the madness, I loved the writers, actors, Ryan, the whole insanity of it, the stories, shooting here, shooting in New Orleans, everything. “

“To cut to the chase, yes, I’m done,” she added.

But she did make a cameo in Season 8, “American Horror Story: Apocalypse,” in 2018.

Lange has been praised for her memorable music performances in the FX series, most notably when she sang “The Name Game” in “American Horror Story: Asylum,” and when she covered David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” in “American Horror Story: Freak Show.”

Season 13 of “American Horror Story” debuts Sept. 24 on FX and Hulu.
