One of the most conservative members of the Supreme Court has raked in millions from an industry he’s ruled in favor of in previous cases, according to a new analysis.
The Guardian reported on Tuesday that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has made up to $2.9 million from “fossil fuel interests” while he’s been on the court. He made that money while also signing onto rulings that slashed environmental regulations, the analysis found.
“The analysis from the non-profit advocacy group and judicial watchdog Court Accountability, shared exclusively with the Guardian, found that even at the lowest range of estimates, Alito gained almost $400,000 from his oil and gas interests since being tapped for the high court by George W. Bush in 2005,” the report reads in part.
“The findings come as the Supreme Court prepares to take up a case in which the oil companies Suncor Energy and Exxon asked the justices to find that federal law prevents subnational governments from filing lawsuits against fossil fuel producers for the climate-warming effects of their products,” it added.
Alito has been the subject of speculation about the efficacy of the Supreme Court’s ethics laws. The Guardian found that he is the only Supreme Court Justice who has not submitted a financial disclosure form for 2025. His last disclosure revealed multiple investments in fossil fuel companies such as “ConocoPhillips and its predecessor Phillips 66, Chevron and the energy infrastructure company Kinder Morgan,” according to the report.
