President Donald Trump drew criticism after signing an executive order reducing the number of diseases covered by childhood vaccines.
According to CNBC, in the Oval Office on Monday, Trump claimed, “Nothing bad can happen from what we’re doing. Nothing bad can happen. We’re going to learn a lot.”
The order directs Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to split the combined measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine into three separate shots given on separate visits.
Trump acknowledged, “It’s inconvenient, it’s five stops, but it’s something that I think will have a huge impact on autism.”
According to Autism Speaks, decades of research involving over a million children proves there is no link between autism and vaccinations.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), a physician, countered, “Vaccines are overwhelmingly safe. Vaccines are effective. Vaccines DO NOT cause autism.”
University of Pittsburgh researcher Daniel D. Brown criticized, “He and everyone in this administration is so astoundingly stupid and intellectually incurious.”
The order comes as the U.S. experiences its worst measles year in decades, with vaccination rates declining since COVID-19, reported CNBC. RFK Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic, has continuously pushed to reshape the childhood vaccine schedule, the outlet added.
