When the U.S. Trade Representative’s office published its proposed exemption list on June 5, diamonds were not included. The ring was presented to the U.S. ambassador in Brussels on June 28. On July 24, diamonds mysteriously appeared on the final tariff exemption list.
Democratic senators are now calling the sequence evidence of a crime. In a letter to the Belgian diamond industry’s trade organization and the ring’s designer, Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) warned that those responsible could face criminal penalties under federal bribery law.
“Your actions could also raise serious legal questions under federal criminal law,” the senators wrote, noting Trump’s documented pattern of providing “special treatment” to business leaders who flatter or offer him gifts.
White House spokesperson Kush Desai claimed the exemption was required by a trade agreement with the European Union signed last summer. However, as MS NOW is reporting, that joint statement was issued on August 21, 2025, and made no mention of diamonds or any exemption for them.
Belgium’s diamond industry had previously won a full tariff exemption in September 2025, only to lose it in February 2026 when the Supreme Court struck down the legal basis for Trump’s original tariffs. The administration replaced those tariffs with a 10 percent surcharge on European diamonds and other imports.
