Wandering capybaras keep invading voting sessions in a Brazilian state legislature

Perhaps they were lobbying for lower taxes on waterfront property.

Wandering capybaras have been turning a Brazilian state legislature into a zoo by casually waddling through the building’s doors and into voting sessions, according to reports.

The giant, laid-back rodents have made a habit of roaming around the legislative building in Cuiabá, in the central Brazilian state of Mato Grosso.

The civic-minded capybaras even caught politicians off guard as they were preparing for a vote last week.

One staffer, Nayara Bueno, captured a video of two of the polite, semiaquatic herbivores lurking across the tile floor of the legislature on July 30, as if on their own official business.

Bueno helped usher the oversized freeloaders — who can weigh up to 175 pounds — out of the office and back into the nearby wildlife-rich park.

“Since there’s a lake right in front of the assembly, there are usually a lot of them,” Bueno told The New York Times.

“At dusk they always cross the street and head over to the assembly building because in front, there’s a fountain that’s always running. So, they’re always hanging around there, eating the grass and wading into the fountain.”

The internet-famous creatures often inhabit rivers, lakes, and wetlands, and are known for their calm demeanor and social nature.

The Mato Grosso state legislature was not damaged by the surprise visit.
