Trump won’t let the Supreme Court have the last word

President Donald Trump took aim this week at two high-profile defeats at the Supreme Court, treating the justices’ efforts to define his power as fresh hurdles rather than the final say.

The high court dealt Trump both of the losses during the term that ended in June, striking down his executive order to end birthright citizenship and blocking his attempt to fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook. This week Trump tried again on both fronts.

On Wednesday the White House told Cook that the president was considering firing her over the same allegations as before and gave her 21 days to respond. The letter, which became public Friday, cited the court’s decision that Cook was entitled to notice and a chance to respond before she could be removed.

And on Thursday, Trump signed two new executive orders meant to limit automatic citizenship for some children born in the United States. Experts doubted either measure could survive another legal challenge.

Then, on Friday, Trump said he would seek the justices’ help to complete his White House ballroom after an appeals court ordered construction to stop until Congress authorizes the project.
