A Government Accountability Office audit commissioned by Sens. Gary Peters (D-MI) and Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) delivered a scathing assessment of DOGE, Elon Musk’s cost-cutting initiative.
The audit found DOGE systematically overstated savings and claimed credit for work already underway, The Washington Post reported.
Musk’s initiative aimed to cut $2 trillion in federal spending but achieved far less, claiming $215 billion in savings on its “Wall of Receipts” website.
The Government Accountability Office, or GAO, examined $110 billion of those claims and found critical problems.
Among the 264 leases, 108 were already being terminated before DOGE existed.
Nearly 2,000 of 13,476 supposedly terminated contracts were never actually eliminated.
Out of the $61 billion in claimed contract savings, nearly half weren’t terminated or couldn’t be verified due to insufficient data.
Roughly $27.4 billion in claimed savings came from contracts never terminated at all.
The GAO repeatedly requested information from DOGE but received no response.
Musk and the White House declined comment.
