Boston University offers free tuition to families earning up to $200,000

Boston University is the latest elite school to offer free tuition to students whose families earn up to $200,000.

On Thursday, the university said students entering this fall will benefit from the tuition pledge, which also covers a portion of housing and dining costs. Parent contributions will be capped at $20,000 a year. Students whose families earn up to $75,000 with typical assets can expect to pay nothing to attend the school, according to the university.

Tuition at BU is $73,024, roughly two-thirds of the total cost of attendance. The university said about 45 percent of undergraduates receive financial aid, which totaled $473 million last year. BU is encouraging families earning more than $200,000 to apply for aid. The university said it takes into account financial circumstances, such as having multiple children in college or residing in a high cost-of-living area.

BU is the second school in the past week to announce a tuition pledge for families earning up to $200,000. Rice University rolled out its initiative on Monday, building on a burgeoning trend of highly selective schools expanding financial aid for middle-class families. There are now at least a dozen colleges and universities that cover tuition for students from households earning up to $200,000, including Swarthmore College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
