Key midterm primary elections kick off in 5 states

Voters decided key primary races in Virginia, Kansas, Missouri, Michigan and Washington state. The most high-profile of the contests — Michigan’s contentious Democratic primary for a battleground Senate seat — was too close to call as of midnight. Rep. Wesley Ball (D-Missouri) easily survived a primary challenge, while Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Michigan) was locked in a close race with his opponent. In Kansas, voters have rejected a GOP-backed measure that would have allowed them to directly elect state Supreme Court justices.
