MAGA Senate hopeful’s ‘complaining’ is starting to ‘undermine’ Trump: Analysis

A MAGA loyalist desperate to win a seat on the U.S. Senate is undermining President Donald Trump’s economic messaging with his public complaining, according to a new political analysis.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, clamoring to claim Sen. John Cornyn’s soon-to-be-available seat, has made a sharp pivot in his race against Democrat state Sen. James Talarico, an MS NOW editorial argued Wednesday.

“President Trump may believe that ‘affordability’ is a word ‘made up by the Democrats’ to undermine him,” wrote Paul Waldman. “But in Texas, a state Trump won by 14 percentage points less than two years ago, one of the most loyal MAGA candidates is abandoning the culture war and hopping on the affordability bandwagon.”

Paxton shifted last week from attacking his opponent as “low-T Talarico” to focusing on an economic plan that has a lot of Democratic talking points, Waldman reported.

“The longtime culture warrior is now talking about affordability and complaining about the economy,” he wrote.

Worse yet, Paxton’s pointing the finger at elites in Washington who he says have made it harder to pay the bills — a sharp contrast to Trump, who asserts America is now in a “golden age” of prosperity.

“What could be more of an insult to the president,” wrote Waldman, “than to say that even with Trump in the Oval Office delivering his glorious economic stewardship to a grateful populace — not to mention Republicans controlling both houses of Congress and every lever of power in Texas — ‘the American Dream is slipping away’?”

How this about-face will work out for Paxton remains unclear because, as Waldman argues, he isn’t exactly known in Texas for his empathy towards people with economic problems.

Paxton’s willingness to try it now could foretell bad news for conservatives in November, Waldman concluded.

“He and his campaign seem to have grasped that this year, the usual culture war fear-mongering is not going to get the job done,” Waldman wrote.

“When the most MAGA of MAGA Republicans starts telling voters that MAGA-controlled Washington has failed them, it’s clear that everything is working to Democrats’ advantage. Even in Texas.”
