Here’s what to watch for Tuesday’s primaries

After a few weeks of relative calm on the midterms calendar, we’ve got a slate of states with important primaries across the country today. Here’s what I’ve got my eyes on:

Michigan Senate primary

The marquee race of Tuesday’s primaries is in the swing state of Michigan, where Rep. Haley Stevens, a four-term congresswoman, and Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, are running to win the Democratic nomination for a Senate seat.

Michigan’s open seat is a must-win for Democrats if they hope to retake control of the Senate in November. The primary is a test of whether swing-state Democrats will choose left-wing or establishment politics. The winner will face Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman who has President Donald Trump’s support.

Déjà vu in Missouri

We’ll see a rematch between Rep. Wesley Bell and former congresswoman . Cori Bush, both Democrats who are vying to represent Missouri’s 1st Congressional District. In 2024, Bush, a left-wing candidate, lost her House seat to Bell, a moderate who was supported by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. AIPAC has weighed in on primaries across the country in favor of bipartisan candidates who are supportive of Israel.

This race will show whether the progressive movement — and its opposition to Israel’s war in Gaza — has gained enough steam this year for Democratic voters to oust an establishment congressman.

Kansas ballot measure

Kansans are voting on a ballot measure Tuesday that, if approved, could have the power to reshape abortion rights and other key issues in the state. The vote will decide whether Kansas elects its state Supreme Court justices directly or appoints them with a merit-based system.
