Man allegedly shoves stranger into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and leaves him to drown: ‘Oh, well’

A man shoved a stranger into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor during a dispute Sunday — and left him to drown even when the victim’s girlfriend told him her beau couldn’t swim, authorities said.

“The defendant stated he replied, ‘Oh, well’ and walked away,” according to charging documents obtained by The Baltimore Banner. The fatal encounter occurred when suspect James Fitzsimmons, 36, got into some kind of argument with 37-year-old James Britt, who he didn’t know, behind a Whole Foods and chased him to the water’s edge and shoved him in, officials said.

Britt’s girlfriend allegedly told Fitzsimmons he couldn’t swim but was ignored. Britt was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after divers pulled him from the harbor.

Fitzsimmons admitted to getting into a brawl with Britt but said the man ran off and jumped into the water on his own volition, police said. But security camera footage shows Fitzsimmons chasing Britt to the water’s edge before pushing him in, according to the docs. Fitzsimmons apparently briefly went into the water with Britt. Police got a call that two men needed to be rescued, but by the time they arrived, Fitzsimmons had already climbed out, according to WBAL-TV.
