Trump admin stares down ‘second Epstein scandal’ — but ‘worse’: analysis

The Trump administration may be on the verge of a “second Epstein scandal,” one that, in some ways, could prove even “worse,” journalist Brian Beutler argued on Friday.

“This ought to be an existential emergency for the American right-wing elite, MAGA, Inc., and even elements of the international far right,” Beutler wrote in an analysis published Friday on his Substack. “But the reaction is eerily mute due (I’d hypothesize) to the decline of reading and (yes) weak political opposition.”

Beutler warned that the fallout from the Tate brothers’ arrest could become a genuine reckoning for the Trump administration, and soon.

Andrew and Tristan Tate face extradition on a range of charges, including child pornography and human trafficking, and their case could ultimately inflict more damage than the political fallout President Donald Trump faced over his past ties to Jeffrey Epstein. argued Beutler.

What could potentially make the Tate brothers’ arrest an even worse scandal for the Trump administration than Epstein, Beutler argued, was that the “Trump family and Trump world connections are much clearer and more recent.”

For instance, Andrew Tate once bragged about having “access to the president’s son” in 2017 after securing an invitation to Trump Tower and taking a photograph with Donald Trump Jr. In 2024, he joined Trump’s youngest son, Barron Trump, on a video call, and boasted about being “very close to the Trump family.”

The Tate brothers were also previously arrested in 2022 on rape and trafficking charges in Romania, though the case has since stalled after pressure from the Trump administration. Both Tate brothers have denied any wrongdoing in both cases.

“People well ensconced in Trump world, including members of his administration and even his family were participants in, or at least aware of, what went down in the Tates’ online and in-person network, which they called the War Room,” Beutler wrote. “The War Room was a paid-access forum for instruction on, and sharing stories about, violently or psychologically coercing women and girls into nonconsensual sex and pornography.”

Given the apparent closeness of the Tate brothers and Trump’s family and allies, coupled with serious allegations they’re facing, Beutler argued the comparison to Epstein wasn’t just apt, but that it may be an understatement.

“It’s like a second Epstein scandal, except with the veneer of worldly sophistication and intellectual ferment swapped out for the aesthetics and physicality of a snuff film,” Beutler wrote. “In some ways it’s worse. Say what you will about Jeffrey Epstein (the worst way to start a sentence) but he at least didn’t openly attempt to build an international movement of copycats.”
