  • The viral video app Seedance is using its video-generation capabilities for tutoring.
  • The app is partnering with the edtech app Gauth to create videos that explain concepts in stories.
  • Both Gauth and Seedance are owned by ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent.

ByteDance’s viral AI video app is seeking a new, younger audience through a collaboration with the education app Gauth.

Gauth, an AI-powered edtech app, told Business Insider its new update will feature AI-generated videos from Seedance to help translate concepts into stories for students. This will go live on August 4, lining up with back-to-school season.

“Created in collaboration with Seedance, it transforms subjects into cinematic, AI-narrated visual stories that make abstract concepts finally click, with adaptive quizzes woven throughout to turn passive watching into active recall,” Gauth said in its press release.

Seedance and Gauth are both owned by ByteDance, the Chinese parent of TikTok.

Gauth, which launched in 2020, now has 86 million monthly active users, a 760% increase since 2023, the company told Business Insider.

The first courses on Gauth to be given Seedance’s cinematic treatment will be history-related, with other subjects to follow, the company said. Business Insider saw video previews in Gauth’s app covering topics such as World War 2, the Industrial Revolution, and the Meiji Restoration.

Gauth’s CTO Alan Wang said in the press release that the new phase of the app, called “AI Course,” will make learning feel “less like studying and more like being pulled into a story.”

Seedance, a platform for AI-generated videos, launched version 2.5 on Friday, promising smarter editing capabilities and longer videos up to 30 seconds per generation. Gauth will use version 2.5 in its “AI Course.”

Seedance, similar in function to Meta’s short-lived Sora, has boosted China’s booming AI drama industry. The app went viral earlier this year after it drew scrutiny from production houses and streaming services, including Disney and Netflix, over intellectual property concerns.

In a statement shared with Business Insider in February, ByteDance said it would “strengthen safeguards” on the app and that it “respects intellectual property rights.”
