‘What could possibly go wrong?’ Trump’s new veterans initiative draws swift ridicule

President Donald Trump boasted about a new program to transition veterans into truck driving, prompting the internet to question his remarks.

Trump announced Freedom Haulers, a new initiative to open pathways for military veterans to become commercial truck drivers, during a White House event. Standing next to a large commercial truck, he announced the new plan and claimed it would be a speedy process to replace “unqualified migrant truck drivers.”

“Any American who has driven a heavy truck for our military will automatically be eligible for a commercial driver’s license, and it’s good-paying jobs, too,” Trump said.

“We’re going to make it as easy as possible for the veterans,” Trump added, saying it would be available to them within two years of active duty service.

Social media users reacted to the news.

“What could possibly go wrong?” Journalist Aaron Rupar wrote on X.

“Truly, no idea is too obviously stupid for this administration. Why not let veterans skip medical school while we’re at it, and head right into your loved one’s OR?” Dan Cluchey, a former senior White House speechwriter for President Joe Biden, wrote on X.

“Wouldn’t this be considered DEI by Republicans’ definition?” Vince Wilson, liberal commentator and YouTube creator, wrote on X.

“Well, now the roads are going to be unsafe. Thanks to the ‘QUICK’ 2-week Truck Driving Education he is planning on giving Veterans. I had a friend who was getting his commercial license to drive a truck and according to him it was pretty complicated,” wrote X user RobL, who frequently posts progressive content.
