President Donald Trump’s standing on the issue that won him the White House in 2024 has collapsed to levels without precedent in modern polling, according to CNN’s Harry Enten.
The president’s net approval rating on inflation, measuring approval minus disapproval, now sits 50 points underwater in CNN’s latest polling – representing more than a 50-point swing from where Trump stood before the 2024 election, when voters trusted him on inflation more than Kamala Harris, creating a dynamic widely credited with helping him win a second term.
“The numbers are laughably bad,” Enten said. “They are laughably bad, but no one is laughing about these.”
“I looked back at every single poll before President Trump that asked about inflation and the approval rating of the president,” Enten added. “There has never been a president before President Trump who had ratings this bad.”
Seventy percent of Americans say the country is on the wrong track when it comes to cost of living, according to the polling. Even within Trump’s own party, sentiment has soured, as half of Republicans now say the country is headed in the wrong direction on cost of living, compared to just 38 percent who say it’s on the right track.
Seventy-eight percent of Americans overall say Trump hasn’t focused enough on lowering prices, and that skepticism has grown sharply among Republicans too, rising from 48 percent early in his presidency to 58 percent now — meaning a majority of his own party agrees he isn’t doing enough on the issue.
