Trump admin quietly revives crusade to slap his name on major NYC landmark: report

The idea of Trump’s name going on a New York City landmark has resurfaced after a Cabinet secretary’s letter, per reports.

The New York Daily News reported that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy sent a letter to Senate leadership on several committees on Wednesday that lists the renaming of New York Penn Station as part of the “administration priorities.”

Duffy wrote that the Trump administration intends to “direct Amtrak to rename New York Penn Station,” per the Daily News. The idea of Trump’s name going on Penn Station has long been suggested, including in internal renderings of an overhaul showing “President Donald J. Trump” etched into marble.

Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News also reported in February that the Trump administration asked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to support the renaming of the Washington Dulles Airport and New York Penn Station after Trump. In exchange, Trump would release funding for the Gateway project, a roughly $40 billion portfolio of projects to modernize a corridor from Newark to New York Penn Station.

Duffy’s letter requested funding for Amtrak, which owns Penn Station, and support for legislation that would allow Amtrak to take in more state and local taxes, the Daily News reported.

The Daily News also noted that Duffy teased Trump’s name for Penn Station while answering a reporter’s question last August about whether the old name would stay.

“I imagine you’re asking, ‘Is this going to be Trump Station?’” Duffy said. “I think that has a nice ring to it.”
