ICE raids took economic toll in Los Angeles, report says

Federal immigration raids in Los Angeles last year caused an “immediate economic shock” to businesses nearby, according to a new studyreleased Wednesday.

The report, from UCLA’s Latino Policy and Politics Institute and the nonprofit Inclusive Action for the City, offers a local look at the ripple effects of President Donald Trump’s deportation push. It comes a little more than a year after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles became a political flash point, with Trump deploying the National Guard in response to protests.

In focus groups and surveys, Latino business owners recounted sharp drops — often more than 50 percent — in their revenue right after the raids, the researchers say. Many street vendors stopped working. Close to a year afterward, most of the people surveyed said their sales remained “below pre-enforcement levels,” the report says.

The authors of the report also analyzed foot traffic around nine enforcement sites and found it dipped in the two weeks afterward, though the change was fairly small — a drop of about three percent within a quarter mile.
