President Donald Trump’s astounding claims about the American soldiers who died over the weekend in the Middle East because of Iranian drone attacks left one political analyst taken aback.
On Friday, reports indicated that two American soldiers were killed in Jordan by an Iranian drone. Another soldier in northern Iraq was killed during a controlled detonation of an Iranian drone, according to reports.
Trump did not respond to the deaths of the American soldiers until Sunday, before he attended the World Cup Final in New York City. Instead, reports indicate that Trump played golf and his family attended multiple soirees.
When Trump finally did respond to the deaths, he called them a “very sad thing” and seemed to brush them off as the cost of conducting a war. Those comments didn’t sit well with David Rothkopf, global affairs columnist for The Daily Beast, who reacted to them during a new episode of “The Daily Beast Podcast.”
“It’s kind of remarkable the degree to which Trump does not know how to relate to people, does not know what a human reaction is,” Rothkopf said, arguing that Trump’s comments show he has “no empathy.”
“If you’re the president of the United States, you started a war of choice. It’s an illegal war. It’s been going on for five months … It’s destroyed global energy markets. It’s going to have a bad effect on global food markets. It is the biggest burden, the biggest albatross you carry around your neck right now,” Rothkopf continued. “You don’t spend the weekend partying while soldiers are dying. And Donald Trump played golf. He went to the Mike Lindell party. He went to a World Cup party. He just doesn’t care. And the message of Donald Trump is very Emperor Nero-esque: I will party while America burns.”
