Conservative drops a bomb on the GOP over two wasted years: ‘What are we doing?’

Former Fox News personality and longtime conservative columnist Juan Williams had little good to say about the Republicans in Congress who are coming up to the midterm election and have done little — while letting Donald Trump run roughshod over the nation’s economy.

In a searing column for The Hill, Williams invoked Ronald Reagan’s famous 1980 question to voters: “Are you better off than you were two years ago?” His answer was unambiguous: an emphatic no as the clock ticks down.

“What are we doing here?” he asked.

Williams laid out his reasons for the conclusion: Voters handed Trump and Republicans unified control of Congress with a clear mandate — lower grocery and gas prices for working families while avoiding costly foreign entanglements.

Republicans have delivered on none of these objectives. Instead, the nation is saddled with an aging Congress incapable of executing even basic governance, he wrote. He pointed out that six members of Congress have died in office during this term, while Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell remains hospitalized at 84. More than 100 current lawmakers exceed age 70, and the confirmation hearings for attorney general nominee Todd Blanche are being presided over by 92-year-old Chuck Grassley and 81-year-old Dick Durbin.

He then added, “The president who nominated him is 80 and wasting time on fables about a stolen election.”

The economic damage is undeniable, he wrote, and pointed out, “From farmers to auto workers, Americans have felt the economic disruption caused by the president’s failed tariffs as well as the global economic fallout from closing the Strait of Hormuz.”

Adding there is no meaningful scrutiny of another endless Middle East war, he continued by emphasizing that “questions remain about whether the administration has fully complied with congressional demands for information on the Jeffrey Epstein sex abuse scandal.”

Williams went further, arguing that even for those who opposed Biden’s policies, objective reality proves life was materially better under Democratic control, stating that when Democrats held “unified power,” they passed the largest infrastructure investment in generations—rebuilding roads, bridges, broadband, and water systems while channeling significant resources to rural America.

Republican unified government has produced the opposite, he noted, citing tax cuts concentrated among the wealthy, skyrocketing income inequality, more billionaires, and more working-class families struggling to pay their bills.

“When one major party moves too far outside the political mainstream, Congress becomes incapable of addressing the country’s biggest challenges,” Williams concluded.
