‘It’s horrid’: Legal expert warns about right-wing threats from Trump’s tech allies

A civil rights lawyer warned that the influx of tech money in politics is giving way to extreme far-right ideas.

During an episode of Legal AF, Barbara Arnwine sounded the alarm, warning that civil rights in the United States face a greater threat because of the influence of “oligarchs” from the technology sector.

In particular, she warned about “forces that I believe have gotten worse in the last decade,” like influence from people “who believe in eugenics.”

She pointed to right-wing philosopher Curtis Yarvin, who’s a blogger and software developer with close ties to GOP politicians, including Vice President J.D. Vance. He notably proposed an app to let Trump direct mobs around the country. Arnwine described him as part of a “tech broligarchy” that’s gaining more power in politics.

However, Arnwine said she’s worried more broadly about “these tech bros, who the best thing they can do with their money is to be haters,” as she sees them as part of a historical mindset that believes, “We’re better because we’re white.” She said it carries on the country’s racist philosophies from the past.

“There’s nothing new about this. What is new is the moneyed interest and the power of moneyed interest in our politics,” she warned. “That our government and our whole democracy is just dominated by money.”

Again tying her concerns back to money from the technology sector, she worried about “technological lying that is able to assimilate and to confuse the public even more. So this is a horrid battle that we’re in.”
