ICE agents fatally shot a person in Biddeford, Maine on Monday morning, with state and federal investigators arriving at the scene as agents surrounded the body.
Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau (D-ME) confirmed the killing and expects the FBI to take over the investigation.
A neighbor told WGME she was awakened by gunshots around 8 a.m and noticed heavy law enforcement presence outside.
According to a joint release between Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and “Presente!” the man killed was 26 and originally from Colombia, reports WABI. Both advocacy groups claim the man was authorized to work in the United States and was issued a Social Security Number.
Reporter Nathan Bernard was on the scene and posted on X, “ICE agents are surrounding a dead body in Biddeford, Maine after the fatal shooting.”
“The entire intersection is now blocked off.”
This shooting represents at least the 11th fatal ICE or Border Patrol shooting since President Donald Trump took office. It follows ICE’s controversial “Operation Catch of the Day” enforcement sweep in Maine earlier this year, where nearly 200 people were detained statewide despite only 11 having criminal convictions.
House Speaker Fecteau criticized the operation as “warrantless, indiscriminate, and quota-driven.”
A protest against ICE is scheduled for noon Monday at Mechanics Park in Biddeford, according to WABI-TV.
Earlier this month, ICE agents fatally shot Lorenzo Araujo, 52, a Houston construction worker.
